Mr. W. Meischke Smith and M. Lanet, referred to in previous despatches as having gone to the principal brine wells in search of petroleum on behalf of M. de Marteau and others associated with him (Société Française des Mines du Setchuan), are not returning to Chengtu. They are proceeding to Chungking, where M. Bons d'Anty, who is about to pay a visit to his post, hopes to meet them before their return to Europe.
Dr. Legendre left this on one year's furlough on the 4th instant. Pending the arrival of another medical officer from Tonquin, he will be relieved by Dr. Erdinger, who, attached in a similar capacity at Chungking, is now returning from home leave.
I have, &c. (Signed) ALEX. HOSTE.
